The new government has decided to get rid of your local council. From no later than 2028 Tamworth Borough Council will no longer exist.
Many people would argue if this is a good or bad thing, but the changes bring challenges.
There are two strands to the move, one creates a large “unitary” council covering half or all of Staffordshire and the other strand creates an elected Mayor for Staffordshire and a neighbouring county.
The question is why should we care and what can we do?
Tamworth Borough Council is made up of local people with a local interests. Its councillors are local residents, local business owners, local workers, local property owners, local families of Tamworth.
These people care about the area. A new larger distant council covering huge parts of Staffordshire will have people making decisions on Tamworth who may have never even been here, who don’t know what Tamworth has to offer, and who certainly won’t know the importance Tamworth has played in the history of our great nation.
We can’t keep Tamworth Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council, the Government and Labour MPs have made that clear, so change is on its way. The questions for the people of Tamworth, and its current councillors, is– What is important and at risk?
What can be done to protect our identity and what matters in our community?
Conservative Councillors have spoke about the challenge to Tamworth's identity in debate at Tamworth Borough Council and raised local concerns. Be it the Castle, the Assembly Rooms, play areas and parks, car parks, our historic town hall, community centres, Ankerside, the castle archive, the castle collection. Tamworth needs local representation on these important issues.
The Labour council has already turned its back on our historic Town Hall. What is next?
Change is already happening with Stoke on Trent City Council publishing a land grab plan - https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/news/stoke-on-trent-news/super-sized-council-covering-stoke-9953365?utm_source=linkCopy&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sharebar
This plan means Tamworth Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council gone, and with it the local ownership and management of our local cultural, historical and community assets.
Methods of saving what matters to us locally include the creation of Trusts to hold and look after historic assets, or we can create a number of small parishes delivering the local services that matter without the bureaucracy and cost of a big Borough Council.
Parishes will be lead by locally elected representatives often without allowances, and certainly without armies of staff. In fact our historic Town hall in Tamworth is the perfect size to house a new local parish council, protecting the building and bringing it back to its intended purpose once again.
You can join our campaign to create local Parish Councils in Tamworth by completing the form below. -
We the undersigned call on Tamworth Borough Council to create one or more councils for the Tamworth Borough Area
This petition will be presented to Tamworth Borough Council to start a governance review with the intention of creating parish councils.
There are strict rules around petitions for Parish councils, we have to ask for details to verify those who sign the petition live in the areas effected
